Labeled Grand Site, this protected natural area partially belonging to the Conservatoire du Littoral covers more than 6,800 hectares, 110 meters high, about 600 meters wide and almost 3 km long. It is the highest dune in Europe which takes shape between forest, sand and ocean. It is home to exceptional flora and fauna with many birds and amazing plant species. Protected since 1930, the Dune is constantly changing, steadily advancing a few meters towards the forest. Its formation took place in several stages over 4,000 years. After cold and dry climatic phases with wind moving and gathering sand, followed by hot and rainy episodes which favored the expansion of the flora. In order to simplify access to the Dune, a staircase of 160 steps is set up each year between April and November. The Corniche stairs also allow you to reach the site, at the bottom of the dune.
Classified as a Grand Site de France, the Dune du Pilat is located at the entrance to the Arcachon basin. From its height of 110 m, it is the highest dune in Europe and offers very beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Landes.
